Visualizing and Refining Terrain Survey

Introduction: For this week's project, the Geography 336 class at the UW of Eau Claire (UWEC) was asked to revisit the topographic landscape that was constructed previously on January 28th, 2016. The purpose of this week's project was to recreate the "snow-scape" from the x, y, and z coordinates collected through the use of ArcMap, and then to resurvey the landscape from last week's project in order to get more points of elevation in designated areas. By doing this, a more accurate depiction of said landscape can be created. Methods: The first step in reconstructing the surveyed terrain was to import the previously constructed excel spreadsheet, that contained the recorded x, y, and z values into ArcMap. This was done by clicking on the "file" tab, then add data, and finally clicking on the "add xy data" option. This gave a simple grid of points that contained the x,y,z data collected. Topographic Survey

Introduction: On April 4th, 2016, the Geography 336: Field Methods class at UW-Eau Claire (UWEC) conducted a field survey on lower campus using a Dual Frequency GPS unit. The purpose of this survey was to map various point features on campus using high precision GPS technology. Then by mapping these features, different maps were created to visually display the locations of these unique features on campus. Study Area and Methods: The Area of Interest (AOI) consisted of UWEC's lower campus, with specific emphasis on the walkways around the parking lot located behind Davies Center. Processing UAS Data in Pix 4D

Introduction: An orthomosaic is a georeferenced image that is is created by correcting distortion using elevation data and camera information. In general orthromosaics are used for terrain surfaces and elevation data. To create a 3D image from this data, previously taken pictures that included embedded coordinate references, were added into Pix4D. Within this week's lab, two separate locations and their associated aerial images were used to make 3D renderings of the captured landscape. Study Area: Although the data was previously collected for the assignment, latitude and longitude was attached to each image taken. From here, it became rather simple to find the area of interest using this data. Thus, figure 12.1 is the resulting study area based on the coordinates collected from the pictures.
